Every October marks the celebration of National Indigenous Peoples Month in the Philippines; and the year 2000 marked the 27th anniversary since the passing of the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA) of 1997. The theme "Valuating, Nurturing, and Honoring Indigenous People's and Indigenous Knowledge" bets on celebrating the contribution of Indigenous Peoples (IPs) to the cultural heritage and future importance of the realization of the protection of the rights and ancestral lands of IPs.

This orientation fosters awareness towards rich tradition and knowledge in indigenous communities through various activities like cultural exhibitions, dialogues, and awareness campaigns promoting understanding and appreciation of their unique practices and knowledge systems. Celebrating their history and contributions within the larger national consciousness also strengthens their identity as people whose inheritance is preserved for future generations.

It is indeed landmark legislation that encompasses many provisions, including those that recognize rights to ancestral domain, self-governance, social justice, and cultural integrity of IPs. Thus, the observance only reiterates commitment of government and society in action, not only in counterpart of IPRA but more so in resolving land disputes and marginalization against IPs.

It shall not only bring concern to IPs but will also let them participate in making voices on matters that affect their life. The Philippines is indeed on its way to having that inclusive society where cultures are respected and celebrated by honoring indigenous knowledge and rights.
