Valentine's day: A celebration of love and affection
On this day, women and men, alike, express love and appreciation toward those who occupy special niches in their hearts. According to some, every February 14 celebrates Valentine's Day, a day usually pointed to as earmarked for lovers, although family, friends, and even oneself should receive some attention and tender love from time to time. Flowers, chocolates, and touching cards and messages aside, Val's Day also reminds us of giving, love, and gratitude, in their quite possibly unmarked existence, down-to-earth, everyday lives.

The historical origin traces back to ancient Rome when, among other accounts, Saint Valentine was thought to be the priest who secretly married young couples when marriage was outlawed. As the day progressed, expressions of love were desired, and literature and traditions nourished this. Today, it is a world affair, from culture to culture, celebrating love in unique variations, from somewhat simple to truly grand displays.
Giving material presents is not the spirit of Valentine's Day. Gifts are often considered an expression of tenderness, but the real meaning of the day lies in the genuine work done. In expressing love, words, small gestures, good deeds, and the time spent with the other matter. A letter written with love, deep conversation, or even the tiniest of sincere gestures will outweigh grandest gifts. It serves as a reminder that love should not only be recognized once a year, but nurtured every day.
To me, demonstrating love can be through listening, kind gestures, and empathy for someone else. More important than the grand gestures are the little things: being there to listen, helping out in times of trouble, or making an effort to appreciate how one feels.

The bottom line: Valentine´s Day is not just for lovers; it´s about love in general. Words, actions, time-all define the meaning of the day. It reminds us that love is a beautiful and powerful thing to be cherished every day, not just on Valentine's Day.
