Climate change has already stopped being a future concern, and this is what every Filipino wakes up to every day. Natural disasters like Yolanda and Odette, droughts, and seashore erosion, among other things, are some of the worries that most, if not all, ponies undergo. All these changes have far-reaching effects that go beyond the destruction of property and displacement; they stress the very social fabric of the society in question.
The more significant contributors to climate change are deforestation, industry and vehicle emissions, and improper waste disposal. In the case of the Philippines, rapid urbanization has increased the emission of greenhouse gases, while areas of the forest that used to help shield communities from flooding and landslides have been cleared due to illegal logging. Furthermore, the ice age has made the beaches hotter and caused even more abusive storms called typhoons that wreak havoc on the inner part of the country. Such problems affect millions of people around the world, and even aggravate the situation for the poor like farmers, fisher folk, and people living in urban slum areas.
Even with these challenges, the resilience of Filipinos particularly comes out. Neighbors help each other to rebuild the houses, lend out tools, and provide help during disaster. Resilience therefore has to be complemented by sustainable solutions. There is need to alleviate the menace of climate change by Developing risk reduction measures, implementing environmental conservation policies, and Creating an awareness to the public on environmental friendly measures. On a personal level, small gestures such as practicing reuse rather than use and throw, switching off lights when not in use, and supporting eco-friendly policies can help in.
The fight against climate change is long and difficult, but the spirit of the Filipino never waivers. Combining courage with action, we will save the environment and give a worthy future to the next generation.
